Thank you to everyone who came to see our shows with Zoe Dance in Cambridge, MA at the weekend. It was wonderful to be able to travel as a company to Boston and to share a stage with another company, to get to know them, to learn, to exchange ideas and information. Like Callie Chapman, director of Zoe Dance, I firmly believe this kind of cross-cultural live performance not only enriches the cultural landscape of the local community, but also broadens the dancers horizons, enabling them to bring home to their communities new concepts, approaches, and energy. With your help in our last IndieGoGo campaign, we were able to pay the dancers a small dividend to perform in Boston - not enough to cover our costs, exactly, but enough to take the sting out of leaving our day jobs for four days. We also paid our composer, our costume designer, and covered our props, travel and marketing expenses. However, as we didn't reach our fundraising goal, we still need to pay the venue and the photographer, which totals over $1,000. Whoa - 2011 has been a busy year! We've worked hard, expanded and grown. Thank you, you who supported us by coming to see shows, by 'liking' and sharing videos and photos we posted on social media, by your kind donations, by giving up your time to help us out with events, and by generally being the wonderfully supportive and loving people that you are.

This year, we performed new works at:

We hosted a dance talk at Riverbank Arts Centre as part of Culture Night 2011.

We gained a fiscal sponsor in the US, meaning you can now make tax deductible donations to expandance at any time through our 501(c)3 Non-Profit umbrella, The Field.

We volunteered our time to help raise awareness about Dance/NYC's census, the results of which were published last week.

We took part in NACHMO - National Choreography Month.

We produced 4 short films:

* International Dance Day video for UNESCO I.D.D., edited by Lauren Auricchio and shot in Dublin, New York and Wicklow
* 'Úll' by Laurie Schneider (currently in post-production)
* A video showing our Over 60s group Ré Órga, generously supported by The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, performing new work in Carlow.
* A short dance film, 'Black Monday', made in collaboration with our Riverbank Arts Centre teenage group and film maker Joe Cleere.

We auditioned in Ireland and NYC for new dancers, and gained some new and lovely people to work with - two of those dancers - Irish Independent dance artist Ailish Claffey, and new Rock Om cast member Matthew Cichon, will be performing with us and Zoe Dance in Boston in the new year.

We also turned 5! Founding members Laurie Schneider, Rachel Wynne and Alicia Christofi-Walshe managed to be in the same country, in the same city, and in the same bar on the same day we founded expandance 5 years ago. It was a special evening, and had some of been less jet lagged it might have gone on later than it did. I can't quite believe all that we've created and accomplished in those five years, it's remarkable, and I'm so grateful to all of you for your continued interest and enthusiasm in our work.

The National Dance Archive in Ireland (University of Limerick) has begun a collection of expandance studio and choreographic notes, sketches, promotional materials and reviews from the last five years, and we're excited to continue to share our work with them. As a company, we're mad about documenting our process, so we were honored when the N.D.A. asked if they could archive some of our materials.

Thank you to The Field, Wickow Arts Council, Dance Ireland, Culture Ireland and all our donors for supporting us through our IndieGoGo campaign this year.

We look forward to meeting more of you in 2012 - we have some exciting things coming up including performances in Boston, New York and Ireland, and more opportunities to meet the dancers in person.

Happy (only slightly belated) Solstice everyone! Here is a wee video of Guy Yair Beider in Frank Spitznagel's New York studio while we recorded the singing bowls for Rock Om this week. It was a new and exceptionally beautiful experience for all three of us.

Update on the Rock Om fundraising...

We've done well so far, thanks to your help. As well as the $1,840 raised through IndieGoGo, we've raised $550 directly through tax deductible donations made possible through our fiscal sponsor, The Field.

However, we still need to pay our costume designer, lighting designer and dancers! If you have yet to make a donation to help us cover the production costs for our great new show Rock Om, please do so today!

A note from Rachel:

It's time to get personal, and let you all know what this means to us.

I've been personally funding the development of Rock Om for over a year. I've sourced and paid for hundreds of hours of studio rental, black and white clothes that could pass as costumes, and poured well over a thousand hours (yes) into developing this work for the company - all this while continuing to run the company, and all this outside my 'day job'. The dancers have given up paid work time and again in order to come into the studio and rehearse, because they believe in this piece and it's ability to enlighten and inspire.

If we don't reach this goal, our lighting designer, our costume designer, I and the dancers don't receive our fee of $500 while we're in Boston. What this means for the dancers is, each of us will give up money we'd usually receive through our day jobs in New York in order to come to Boston and perform this piece. December is nearly here and we have a lovely event, Comfort Dance, coming up to start off the holiday season! This will be a shared evening of contemporary dance work with Folded Productions at the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge, Thursday, December 8th.

It's going to be a delicious evening of candlelight, mulled wine, and hot chocolate in the Riverbank's cosy theatre café. We'll be performing new work, company repertoire, premiering a dance film, and there will be some delightful surprises.

Gone are the days of studio showings, where we could get away with dancers performing in rehearsal clothes, where 'studio lights' could be rationalized with "it's a work in progress." The last 12 months have been a labor of love. We have torn the skin on our feet, spent precious rehearsal hours mopping flooded studio floors, and sobbed into our partners' arms. We have marveled at all the little choreographic miracles that sometimes happen when we thought we'd hit a wall. Now, we've reached a point where cannot continue making this piece with a ''New York budget - i.e. zero'' (as our composer so eloquently put it).

I don't do this often, but...

I'm putting a video up on the blog that's not ours.

It's not a video with choreography, or dance, or theatre. It's not a video by expandance. It doesn't even have one of us in it.

But it shows one of nature's marvels, the one that happened to be the inspiration for expandance technique: Birds flocking. And boy, these starlings flock the flock out of flocking...

The expandance technique is based on this premise: Birds / fish / animals move in sequence with each other all the time, without thinking about it, talking about it or planning it. They don't bump into each other, they just move together, completely harmoniously. If we were to get out of our human intellects long enough to let the infinite intelligence of our bodies be in charge, perhaps nature would allow us to move in close proximity to each other without injury.

(Here's a secret: it does! And soon we'll be improvising more outside of the confines of the rehearsal studio, so you can see what we mean when we talk about ''improvising from our centres instead of our heads'')

A trip home, and a visit to Ré Órga

As many of you know, expandance celebrated 5 years in existence last week. To celebrate, I flew home to Ireland from my current digs in NYC in order to be with Laurie and Alicia, and to meet with a couple of venues we may perform in in 2012. (More on that soon!) It was lovely to be back in Dun Laoghaire and to be able to catch a performance and a ballet class at Dance Ireland while in Dublin.

One of the highlights of the trip turned out to be my visit to Alicia's Over 60s expandancers Ré Órga at the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow. Alicia speaks highly of this group - it's been going strong now with over 25 regulars in attendance for over a year - and I was looking forward to meeting them. What I didn't expect was their overwhelming welcome, nor their joyous and obviously solid rapport as a group.

I spoke with many of the dancers over their tea break and without exception they thought Alicia was 'full of enthusiasm' and great to work with, and enjoyed their weekly classes with her. I was also delighted to see them rehearse a couple of their fabulous, and quite beautiful performance pieces.

Ladies: It was so lovely to meet you, after writing blog posts about you, hearing about you all for so long, and working with Alicia and GB Shaw on the administration required to get this programme off the ground. Thank you for such a generous welcome, and for your commitment to expandance!

p.s. did you notice the new name? After months (and months!) of deliberation, Alicia, along with our Over 60's group has decided on a name: Ré Órga - literally translated from Irish it means "Golden Age" - but as our very own Donnacha MacAodhagáin explains, it's more than that: 'Ré is a lovely word - doesn't just mean an age, or period of time, but is an old Irish word for the moon, too - which they used to measure time, long long ago....'

Audition NYC - male dancer

We are looking for a male dancer over 21 years old for a continuing project with strong improvisational & partnering skills, along with solid modern / ballet training. A background in martial arts, yoga, or meditation is a plus. You should be open to working in a process-oriented way as the work is extremely collaborative, and based in meditation and improvisation. Dancer must be available to commit to Tuesday night and Thursday morning rehearsals beginning August 23rd - end of Sept, totaling 4 hours a week, and rehearsals in Nov, Dec & Jan (times TBD). expandance has booked performances in Boston in January and a tentative week long Ireland tour in April 2012. All performances are paid and travel expenses covered.

Improvised Performance this Sunday in Dublin - YOU choose the music!

THIS SUNDAY Aug 7th

Laurie Schneider will perform a completely improvised piece using the expandance technique as her starting point. Laurie is a gorgeous improviser, so this in itself will be a beautiful show. But...what? Not exciting enough for you? How's this: Not only will she not know her movements before she steps on stage, she won't know the music she will dance to either.

Alicia and Rachel (both currently in New York City) have created a playlist of 10 songs for Laurie, each of which contains a message from us to her. Some are literal - in the lyrics of a song, for instance. Others are pieces of music that represent a shared history between the three of us.

Laurie hasn't seen the playlist (we're sending it directly to the event's organisers) - nor will she see it until after her performance. The first time she will hear the music will be when she is already standing in front of you, in her first moment of performance. And YOU dear audience, will get to choose what Laurie dances to. When you enter the performance space on Sunday, you'll be asked to choose a number between 1 and 10. Don't think about it, just blurt out the first number that comes to mind. Laurie will dance to whatever song corresponds to the number on the playlist most popular with the audience. In the event of a tie, a coin will be flipped to determine the song.

The playlist will also be available to audience members after the show, should any of you be interested in viewing it and talking to Laurie about the meaning behind our choices. And we'll put it up here on the blog.

Laurie's intention behind this work is in essence to have Alicia, Rachel, and her audience in charge of the piece. Vulnerable? Yup. Courageous? We think so. Magical? It just might be!

What a night, what a crowd, what a performance!

As a prelude to the performance and to add to the high drama of getting to the space the heavens above roared with thunder and the streets were engulfed with rivers of rain and hailstone. Not to be detered we made it to La Cathedral and got down to buisness
.
A big thank you to Ailish and Kathleen for their open, smiling, connected performance they gave of 'little Time, little Space', to Brigit at the Back loft who organised the night and the audience for their connection and willingness to come along for the ride!

So many memories and a great sense of being home was felt in the Back loft. This was the space were expandance was born in ICNWP 2006. Almost 5 years on in different continents, 3 new children, a marriage and so much more in between... I am looking forward to what comes of the next 5!

We're delighted to be presenting the next installment of '12 Steps', Alicia's solo about her process in dance-making. This piece has been performed at Riverbank Arts Centre, Kildare and at the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow, and we're happy to be bringing it to LD Dance Fest at the Backstage Theatre on Friday.

Over the last couple of months we've developed the text and movement of this piece via Skype rehearsals between Alicia (on Donard Mountain in Wicklow) and Rachel (in New York City) and that process alone has been enlightening and hugely beneficial to both of us as dance artists. Come see the result on April 29th, 4pm at the Backstage Theatre, Longford, Ireland.

We're back with a high-energy contemporary dance & performance workshop for TEENS at Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge, County Kildare this Sunday 13th March.

Dance technique, choreography, and performance all in one day! Over the course of the workshop participants will choreograph a dance and get a chance to perform their choreography on the Riverbank stage for family and friends.

In Retrospect...NACHMO 2011

Every day in January I choreographed new material as the expandance member taking part in the New York initiative NACHMO! this year.
January was a busy month overall. The commitment to 31 days of creating new material was a huge undertaking for me on top of my general work load of daily practice (meditation and improvisation), teaching, completing proposals and applications, planning new programmes for our community dance initiatives, and general administration. The biggest challenge of the month was not finding studio space or organizing rehearsal schedules for other dancers, but was just having the energy to get creative and moving. But, I’m proud to say I DID IT! Most days I was able to work in our Wicklow studios and other days I choreographed where I could; in the shower, on our front porch, or with my son while he ate his lunch choreographing a ‘finger’ dance, which was just that, my fingers dancing while my body sat calm and still beside my son.
At the start of the month I had posed certain questions for myself:

How do I feel when movement phrases change from set choreography to improvisation; when I move from ‘knowing’ to ‘not knowing’ ?
Can an audience member distinguish between when a dancer is dancing set choreography or improvisation?
How do the dynamics, timing, and spacing of the movement series change when I’m dancing set choreography as a posed to improvisation?

NACHMO! presented an opportunity, a gift in the new year, a little nudge up the stairs into the studio. As I look back on the month, I realise I’ve only just begun this research and that these are ongoing questions for me as a dancer and for us as a company. Throughout 2011 I hope to research these questions more. Below is a short clip of set choreography and improvisation developed over the course of the month.

them. Celebrity looks at the construction of identity and the invention of character
in a world where fame equals power equals love equals worth- in a world where
you could be the next big thing and you’re only a Facebook page away from a
better, prettier, more popular you.

Big hugs and Baby steps

Alicia just ended a note to me on Skype chat with 'Big hugs and Baby steps!'

I wanted to share this with you as it's the perfect encapsulation of how we expandance company members decided to approach the work this year: Be kinder to ourselves, and take each thing one small step at a time.

The administration and day-to-day running of a dance company, even one as small as ours - writing funding & grant applications, updating blogs, websites, twitter, facebook, editing video footage, hiring space, ongoing research into performance platforms, not to mention choreographing! - can be overwhelming at times, with to-do lists that reach the floor. (Add onto that the day job and you've a nice full workload.)

So we were delighted to find out about NACHMO (thanks Erica Frankel.) It stands for National Choreography Month, and in 2011 it's this month. NACHMO's aim is to build a community of dance artists who commit to creating new dance work every day for the 31 days of January - even if it's just 20 seconds of new choreography. We encourage you to check out their blog, and ours, for videos and updates over the next few weeks.

The expandance daily technique, as many of you know, is rooted in meditation followed by improvisation, and we're utilizing NACHMO to take this one step further - to commit to creating set material on a daily basis as well. Thanks for the inspiration, NACHMO! Alicia is the company member committed to the project this year - here are a few video stills from yesterdays session in the Wicklow studio.

What an expansive year it’s been!

expandance had a full and exciting year in 2010 and we're looking forward to 2011! This year we performed a total of five new works in two countries, launched two new studios (Dublin and Wicklow, supporting our continued Skype rehearsals with New York) and even found time to have a baby (nice work Laurie.) We also brought three works made in the U.S. home to Ireland. Rachel's Tributaries was presented as part of Illuminating Artists New Works festival at TADA! Theatre, NYC and 3 months later we brought it home, performing it at 'Some expandance evening...' in Dance Theatre of Ireland. Christina's Chi'il Bel Sogno was also shown at DTI along with Making Change, now developed into a trio. Alicia and Laurie's duet little Time / little Space was performed at the Riverbank Theatre, Kildare, and at 'Block T' in Dublin. Rachel's Rock Om, with five new dancers, was shown at Webster Hall, NYC as part of their Quarterly Arts Soiree. And Alicia performed her solo 12 Steps at The George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow. It was a busy year of teaching too, with workshops for adults in New York, teenagers at Shawbrook and Riverbank Theatre, and Over 60s at VISUAL. Alicia's 1st semester of the expandance Over 60s workshop in the George Bernard Shaw Theatre culminated there last week in a double performance - 'Neversaynever', performed by the group, and '12 Steps', a solo performed by Alicia. Here's what some of the workshop participants had to say about the experience:

I have thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and have learned so much. You are an inspiration and the
experience has been good for both 'mind & body'. I also like the way we exercise the different areas of
our body and it has to add to our overall well-being. - Marie

That was a great show you managed to get the ladies confident enough to perform in. Your enthusiasm
and encouragement was the only thing that would have given a lot of them the courage to perform on a
stage- for an audience.

I will be the first in to your next session - rarely have I come across a more enthusiastic and talented
Dance and movement Instructor with such patience, skill and good humour --just what us elderly ladies
need -- keep up the good work! - Betty

I found it a valuable experience, stretching muscles I had not realised were so tense until then. The
group were encouraged to extend themselves as much as possible and there was no pressure for
those of us less able .In that way you inspired confidence and emphasised that to enjoy the dance was
paramount.

Dancing in the snow!

With 8 inches of fresh snow outside this morning I decided to take 12 Steps and make the first footprints of the day. I couldn't resist!

Things have slowed down a bit since last week's show at George Bernard Shaw Theatre and our workshop at Riverbank Arts Centre! With the hills covered in snow and no hectic class planning, choreographing, or performances until after Christmas I had time in our Wicklow Studio to practice. No pressure, no deadlines, just bringing it back to where we started in 2006, meditation, improvisation, ie. honest movement.

On Monday my first session in the studio was difficult in the sense that my mind wanted to continue to plan and create and my body was moving in a habitual way, doing movement that was familiar and comfortable. By the end of the day on Tuesday, things had changed. I was able to quiet my mind and my body moved in new uninhibited ways. You'll see in the video that this pressure-free time in the studio is wielding results!

Tributaries

Tributaries premiered in New York this spring as part of Emerging Artist's Theatre's 'One Woman Standing' Festival. Choreographed and performed by Rachel Wynne, this piece of dance theatre is accompanied by a sound scape of company members and supporters voices in Ireland and the United States, from interviews conducted throughout the rehearsal process. A show about the making of a show, Tributaries is a sweet, rambunctious and vulnerable foray into the lives of a choreographer, a dancer and a clown, who just happen to share the same body, and pays tribute to those who have influenced and supported work of expandance over the last few years.

Chi'il Bel Sogno

Choreographed and performed by expandance's newest company member Christina Noel Reaves, Chi'il Bel Sogno is a new look at the classic Puccini aria from La Rondine through movement and voice. A New York-based dancer, composer and classically trained singer, Christina has previously performed for Meredith Monk, Doug Elkins, David Dorfman, and Ellis Wood among others.

Our next expandance workshop is all about Getting it Wrong!

How often in your daily life do you give yourself permission to make mistakes? To grow from them without judging yourself for making them in the first place? To like yourself in spite of not attaining 'perfection' in all you do?
As a recently outed perfectionist myself, I realized I never allowed myself to Get Stuff Wrong. That's a lot of pressure! So I thought 'Let's do a workshop where we can dance, move, play and above all else - Get our Wrong ON - and have fun with it!'

For three Thursdays this June & July, we'll give ourselves 1 1/2 hours to do just that. Take a long lunch and join me in Midtown!

* Thursdays June 24th, July 1st & July 8th
* 12.15pm - 1.45pm

In July, Alicia is teaching an expandance workshop for teenagers at The Riverbank Theatre. Rachel will be in Ireland to guest teach sections of her newest piece Tributaries as part of the workshop.

Each morning will feature a fun, engaging technique-based contemporary dance class.
After lunch, each afternoon you will have the chance to:

* Experience the expandance technique: an expansive and centered approach to improvisation, choreography & performance
* Learn practical tools for utilizing pre-performance nerves that you can use for the rest of your performing career
* Create your own choreography
* Learn expandance company repertoire from members of the company

Genesis Project / expandance new NYC home

I think we've blogged about Genesis Project before. Started by two accomplished dance artists (and good friends of ours) in Ireland - Ella Clarke and Julie Lockett - Genesis Project emphasizes the necessity of a daily practice for all dance artists. Genesis entered our world 2006, at a time when expandance was just finding it's feet, and provided us with the time and space to look at how we approach our work as a company. We have been avid supporters of Genesis ever since, and so we're delighted to see them acknowledged by Michael Seaver in this article in The Irish Times today.

Speaking of time and space: We're delighted to announce that expandance has a new home in which to continue our daily practice in New York. Space 403 is a loft in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and expandance are now in residence there and utilizing the space in collaboration with architect Oleg Moshkovich. Thank you Oleg - our newest patron!

Dear expandance friends,

It's been a great year for us, and we want to thank you for being a part of our group of supporters and friends.

We performed 'Trio with Invisible Third' at Movement Research's Open Performance Series at Dance Theater Workshop, NY, & CoisCéim Dance studio, Dublin simultaneously, premiered two new pieces ('Making Change' for Brooklyn Arts Exchange and 'Fountain' for 60x60Dance NYC), were accepted to two festivals (BAX Upstart Festival & Absolut Fringe Dublin), became certified as a Pilates instructor (Laurie), became certified as a Transforming Cellular Memory teacher (Rachel), ran a marathon (Alicia), and began teaching the expandance technique to the wider NY dance community.

We became a lot more tech savvy too! We're now on Twitter - come follow us :D

Here at expandance we are so proud of Alicia for running the Dublin City Marathon this year. This from a girl who had never been jogging just a year ago, and who trained herself up to do it. Her fundraising target was €1,000, and she far surpassed that, raising €1,795 in total for Aware. Here she is being held up by her Dad at the end of the race :)

After training herself for the last year, running through Queens, NYC, and the on the roads and hills of Wicklow, Ireland, Alicia is currently up to her 20 mile mark in training. The great news:

At the beginning of May, 'Making Change' was accepted by Dublin Fringe Festival 2009. This is an honour: expandance are big fans of DFF. However...

The sad news:

After months of deliberation, we had to concede that without funding, it is not possible to put this show on as part of DFF. It's the first time I (Rachel) have turned down a performance opportunity because of finances in over a decade of making dance. It was a tough decision, but one which we, as a company, came to mutually. We hope that 'Making Change' will have it's chance in the near future, and we thank those of you who made the first couple of performances in New York so magical, especially Christina, Carlos Cruz, and those at BAX.

In other news, Alicia has a busy summer of expandance workshops coming up in Ireland, and we'll be posting those dates soon.

We're delighted that guest artist Christina Reaves will be performing Rachel Wynne's 'Making Change' at BAX Upstart Festival on April 4th.

expandance met Christina through a recent piece by Krista Racho-Jansen that Rachel and Alicia danced in, and we felt she was perfect to take Alicia's place in 'Making Change', which was originally choreographed on her.

About Christina: After a BFA in Music: Voice Performance from Georgia State University, and an MFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Christina Noel Reaves pursues dance and voice performance, instruction, and composition. In addition to singing in operas and musicals, she has had the privilege of dancing for Doug Elkins, Ellis Wood, David Dorfman, Ivy Baldwin, Curt Haworth, Gary Abbott, Christopher Williams, Gus Solomons Jr., Kay Cummings, Candess Giyan, Melanie Lynch-Blanchard, Kelly Hayes, Patrycja Noworol, Yue Yin, and Carlos Cruz.

Rachel & Christina fly NYC - DUBLIN this July, bringing with them three works never before seen in Ireland: Tributaries, Making Change and Chi'il Bel Sogno.

Combine these with a new piece - little Time / little Space by Alicia & Laurie and you have an enchanting evening of expandance work, and a rare opportunity to see all four expandance members in one country at the same time, sharing a stage.
